Cost of Democracy – JO Protest

Sri Lankan protests, Political unrest

Sri Lanka known as the paradise island just south of India, boasts of all natural resources to fit in to its claim. Surrounded by the beautiful Indian Ocean, the country has immense natural resources to be almost self sufficient. Tropical weather allows agricultural products to be grown throughout the year and has abundance of fertile land to cultivate on. The beautiful and untouched rainforests makes the weather somewhat predictable and balanced compared to other parts of the world.

With a history of over 2500 years and a proud one at that. Boasting of kings and kingdoms, taking on foreign militaries and defeating them. Sri Lanka yet remains a developing country.

Ever since independence from the British in 1948, it has been a downhill. Sri Lanka has tried to remain a democratic socialist republic, however the democracy has brought the country to almost ruination. People of Sri Lanka don’t understand how to enjoy freedom. They need to be governed, and governed with an iron fist. The most successful years of Sri Lanka was when it was governed by kings, who’s word was law and anyone challenging it was put to death. I don’t endorse the idea, but it sure seems like we have it in our genes to be governed in such a manner.

No Government has been able to govern the country to any form of success or economic prosperity since 1948. There has been constant friction mainly between a capitalist and a socialist party forming the two major political fractions. Both parties have governed the country for almost equal number of years, but neither party has been able to put the country on the right track. The reasons for this are numerous, andt the biggest being greed and quality of politicians we appoint to govern us. I will leave this topic to a later date to be discussed, but lets draw attention to the problem at hand.

The JO protest march that comes to Colombo tomorrow 5th September 2018

Entire country, or at least the capital Colombo goes to sleep in suspense tonight. Should I go to office tomorrow? Should I send my Kids to school tomorrow? Will I be able to get back home after office tomorrow? Will my kids be safe if they go to school tomorrow? I need to get to hospital to collect my medicines, will I be able to do that? These are a questions and worries all of Colombo will go to sleep with tonight.

Is this really necessary? Of course we lived in an era where we didn’t know if we would come back from work or school because of the bombs that went off in the capital. But we finished that. Our hero’s paid the price with their lives to not have such worries. We have paid enough with our worries in this country. why do we need this kind of erratic actions by the so called responsible citizens of our nation?

Colombo has seen many protests in the recent past, tomorrow being the mother of all protests. The organizers of the protest are the so called JO (Joint Opposition) These are the very same guys who governed the country not so far back as 2014. Obviously people saw something wrong in them and voted them out. There is a five year term for any government. Shouldn’t they allow this government to go its term? I am in no sense taking the side of the present government, they have their own issues which they need to sort out. But why is the JO in so much of a hurry to topple governments?

My thoughts and cries go out to the people who join these protest rallies. Do you see a cause in them? I mean an actual cause? A bottle of Arrack, a bath packet and a free ride to and from Colombo is not a cause. If the people who protest tomorrow are genuine about the cause they are protesting about, I say well done to them and well deserved. But I am sure there would be hardly anybody who would even know why they came to Colombo by 4pm tomorrow.

The country’s democracy allows people to congregate and make a peaceful protest. However it no where says to avoid inconvenience to others. Should we allow meaningless protests and the breakdown of daily life of average people who earn their day to day living to be disturbed in the name of democracy? Where does democracy apply to them? The single mother who needs to get to the pavement to sell her lottery ticket to feed her children? How is democracy paying for their meal tomorrow?

Protest organizers will say it is for a greater cause. It is to save the country from ruination. But hellooooo……. they were in power four years back, why didn’t they save the nation? This is a pack of lies spread by an organized group of criminals using the money they earned illegally to gather a wider reach trying to get back on the horse so that they can further enhance their fortunes.

The only way to change this system is to change the ideologies of our people. To learn that politicians have not done anything for this country, other than loot it. People need to start saying no! We will not be fooled. If the crowds that plan to come to Colombo tomorrow say, this is not our cause, this is not our fight, this is a struggle for greed of power, and if they realize this, the country will move forward. Sri Lanka had people who put country first. But that breed is fast diminishing, we wish the country can be awakened by someone who would say, we will not be bought for money or for power, we will lead this country towards prosperity. And no democracy shown or delivered to whoever stands in the way of Sri Lanka moving forward.
